3D Mammograms starting in October

Annual mammos

Starting in October, Madison Regional Health will be offering 3D mammography, which is just in time for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

So what is 3D mammography? 3D mammography is actually breast tomosynthesis which uses a moving x-ray source and a digital detector. The data is then reconstructed using computer algorithms to generate thin slices of images. This type of screening has shown promise in women with dense breast tissue or those who are high risk for breast cancer. According to most studies, 3D mammos can also decrease the false negative rate and increase the rate of cancer detection.

The American College of Radiology recommends an annual mammography starting at age 40.
