MRHS receives award from SD EMS for Children

EMS award

South Dakota EMS for Children awarded Madison Regional Health System with the 2017 South Dakota Heroes award on Friday, November 3.

The award was given to MRHS for their dedication to providing Madison and the surrounding communities with education on reducing injuries in children. Two programs were particularly identified by SD EMS for Children, the “Don’t Thump Your Melon” helmet and bike safety program, and the “It’s Not Fine Til You’re 4’9” car seat safety program.

MRHS partners with the Madison Lakes Cycling group, Madison Police Department and Madison Fire Department to put on Bike Safety Day in Madison each year at the facility. The day helps children and adults learn more about bicycle and helmet safety with emphasis on “Don’t Thump Your Melon”.

The “It’s Not Fine Til You’re 4’9” program visited area elementary and preschools to promote the safe use of car seats and boosters seats. MRHS was able to visit six schools during their fall open houses to help parents and children understand the importance of booster seats. Children could walk through a 4’9” doorway to see if they could easily walk under it. If they could, they still needed to be in a booster seat. Through proceeds from Buckle Up for Becca, MRHS was able to give away almost 25 boosters seats to area children through this program too.

Other educational outreach efforts that MRHS has been a part of are campaigns for hunting and farm safety, reducing distracted driving and ATV safety with the Madison FFA during the SOFY (Save Our Farm Youth) program.
