Thurow receives Doris Garwood Pharmacy Scholarship

Joshua Thurow

Madison Regional Health Foundation has awarded Joshua Thurow from Ramona, S.D. with the Doris Garwood Pharmacy Scholarship for 2018. The $1000 scholarship, in memory of Doris Garwood, is given to a student from the Madison, S.D. area with at least two years of college completed. The applicant must also be accepted or enrolled in a pharmacy program.

Thurow is a 2015 Oldham-Ramona High School graduate and has attended three years at South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D. He has completed two years of pre-pharmacy education, as well as one year of pharmacy school. He also serves as a teaching assistant and peer mentor with the Honors College, along with being an intern and teaching-team member in the human anatomy lab. Thurow will also serve as the fundraising co-chair for the Student Collaboration for the Advancement and Promotion of Pharmacy (SCAPP), as well as the Vice Regent for the local chapter of Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity.

Thurow is on track to complete his Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences in May of 2019, and to receive his Doctor of Pharmacy in 2021. His current plans are to pursue a career in hospital pharmacy, specializing in critical care or oncology, but he’s open to exploring other areas in pharmacy.

The Doris Garwood Pharmacy Scholarship was established with the Madison Hospital Auxiliary in 1988 when Garwood passed away suddenly from heart failure. The fund was established by her husband, Wendell, who passed away in April of 2018, and her family.
