2020-2021 Doris Garwood Pharmacy Scholarship Winner Announced

Madison Regional Health Foundation is proud to announce that Mikayla DeNoon has been awarded the 2020-2021 Doris Garwood Pharmacy Scholarship. DeNoon is from Dell Rapids and is currently enrolled in the South Dakota State College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions. Mikayla has earned a 3.95 GPA and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor's of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences.

"Every scholarship I receive is very helpful and appreciated," said Mikayla. "This past year, I was a co-chair of the Operation Diabetes Committee of SCAPP, a pharmacy organization. I led a new event this year in making care packages to donate to pediatric patients at Avera McKennan who were diagnosed with type one diabetes," DeNoon continued.

Stephen Klekas, Madison Regional Health Foundation Director, shared the purpose and history of the scholarship, saying, "The $1000 scholarship, in memory of Doris Garwood, is given to a student from the Madison, S.D. area with at least two years of college completed. The applicant must also be accepted or enrolled in a pharmacy program. The Doris Garwood Pharmacy Scholarship was established with the Madison Hospital Auxiliary in 1988 by her husband and family when Garwood suddenly passed away from heart failure. This scholarship has been awarded annually since 1989 and has helped many pharmacy students complete their education."

Madison Regional Health Foundation Board of Directors, Dr. Ashley Crabtree and Marlin Brozik, met with Mikayla DeNoon recently to present the scholarship award. During their meeting, Brozik and Crabtree asked Mikayla to share about her educational experience. DeNoon stated, "My education is extremely important to me, which is evident by my cumulative GPA of 3.957 and graduating Summa Cum Laude distinction." DeNoon also shared with the Foundation members what her future goals are by saying, "Continuing my education at SDSU not only teaches me needed skills and knowledge for my future career as a clinical pharmacist, but it also enhances my leadership, determination, responsibility, and learning skills, which are all very important for a successful career. Upon graduation, I would like to complete a residency in a hospital setting in order to advance my knowledge and become specialized in a certain area of pharmacy. After which, I aim to be a clinical pharmacist in a hospital setting where I can achieve my ultimate goal of helping others."

For the summer, Mikayla is a pharmacy intern at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. After finishing her degree, Mikayla would like to complete a residency in a hospital setting to advance her knowledge and become a specialist in certain areas of pharmacy. DeNoon plans to be a clinical pharmacist.
